Rotation System

Managing expiration dates and supply rotation

A rotation system keeps long-term stores fresh. Use and replace products systematically to avoid waste. The core rule: FIFO – First In, First Out.

FIFO rule (First In, First Out)

Items bought first should be used first. Put new purchases at the back or bottom, older in front/top. Prevents expiration.

Organizing storage space

  • • Mark dates clearly with a marker on the package exterior
  • • Group by type: grains, cans, spices separately
  • • Use shelves accessible from both sides or gravity-fed racks
  • • Keep inventory: what, how much, purchase and expiry dates

Review schedule

  • • Monthly: check short-dated items (3-6 months)
  • • Quarterly: full inventory update
  • • Yearly: review long-term stores (rice, beans, cans)

Understanding package dates

  • • Best-before date: still safe but quality drops after
  • • Use-by date: after this the product may be unsafe (perishables)
  • • Production date: useful for long-term items without other dates

Often good past the date

  • • Canned goods (not rusty, not bulging): 1-5 years past date
  • • Dry goods (rice, pasta, grains) kept dry: many years past date
  • • Frozen foods: safe but quality drops after 6-12 months

Quality checks before eating

  • • Look: mold, discoloration, damaged packaging
  • • Smell: sour, rotten, unusual odors
  • • Texture: slimy, too soft or hard

Digital tools

Inventory apps (Pantry Check, Grocy) scan barcodes, set reminders, and create shopping lists.
