Hunting and Fishing

Basics of obtaining meat and fish in survival situations

Hunting and fishing provide animal protein but are legally regulated. In Poland they require licenses. This is educational and for extreme scenarios.

⚠️ LAW: Hunting without a license and landowner permission is illegal. Fishing needs a permit. Follow regulations while they apply.

Priorities for meat sourcing

  • • Fish: easiest, high protein, simple tools
  • • Birds and small game: traps, slingshots, easy to process
  • • Large game: requires firearms, skill, hard to transport/process

Fishing methods

  • 1. Rod and line — Basic method. Needs line (0.2-0.4mm), hooks, weight, float. Bait: worms, insects, small fish.
  • 2. Gill net — Effective in still waters. Needs a 1.5-2m net and knowledge of the bottom.
  • 3. Fish traps — Wicker basket with cone entrance placed in a stream. Fish swim in and cannot exit.

Small game traps

  • • Rabbit snare: wire loop on animal path
  • • Deadfall trap: heavy stone/log propped on a trigger stick
  • • Bird net: spread on ground with bait; pull line to close

Safety and hygiene

  • • Field dress immediately: remove innards to prevent spoilage
  • • Wash hands after handling wild animals (parasite/bacteria risk)
  • • Cook meat thoroughly (min 70°C internal) to kill parasites/bacteria
  • • Avoid animals that look sick: bald patches, odd behavior, foul smell

Preserving meat

  • • Drying: thin strips dried in sun or over fire (3-7 days)
  • • Smoking: cold smoke (15-25°C) for several days
  • • Salting: meat covered in coarse salt
  • • Brining: meat in 10% salt solution for 1-2 weeks

Hunting ethics

Take only what you will use. Avoid unnecessary suffering. Don’t hunt during breeding seasons. Respect nature.
