Generators - Expert Knowledge

A generator provides instant power. Indispensable for powering large loads (heat pumps, well pumps, fridges) quickly. However, it requires fuel, maintenance, and noise discipline.

CARBON MONOXIDE KILLS!

Never use a generator indoors, in a garage, or basement. Even with open doors. Exhaust is odorless and deadly. Generator must be outdoors, min. 3 meters from windows.

1 Generator Types

Inverter Generators

Quiet, lightweight, fuel-efficient (adjusts RPM to load). Provides "clean power" safe for electronics. Ideal for apartments (balconies) and homes.

Open Frame Generators

Loud, heavy, rugged. Often lack voltage stabilization (AVR) sufficient for computers. Good for power tools, pumps, and lighting.

2 Fuel

Gasoline: Readily available, but degrades quickly (3-6 months). Generator requires frequent carburetor cleaning.

LPG/Propane: Clean burning, fuel doesn't degrade for years. "Dual Fuel" generators are the best prepper choice.

Diesel: Very efficient, durable engines. Fuel stores longer than gas (with additives). Loud and expensive to buy.

3 Grounding

For electrical safety, the generator should be grounded (rod in earth connected to the terminal on the frame).
